The Devon PTO assists in many ways to strengthen communication between home and school and promote Devon spirit within our school community.
First Day Packet
These are the packets that are sent home with each child on the
first day of school and include information about the school, emergency
contact information request forms, etc. Work in this area begins before
the start of school and involves collecting flyers from different
divisions in the school to include in the packets, making copies and
assembling the packets.
Devon Directory
At some schools in the T/E district, parents must pay for a
directory each year. Here at Devon, due to the efforts of the PTO
volunteers, we are able to provide the directory free of charge to all
Devon families. The directory is published once a year and the work
(layout, student & district data gathering, securing advertising)
generally begins late in August and is completed with the printing in
early October.
Homeroom Parents
Homeroom parents play a vital role at the school as they are
responsible for coordinating communications between teachers and
classroom parents. Homeroom parents work with teachers to organize
volunteers for ongoing classroom activities, holiday parties, and
special projects. The homeroom parent chair serves as the "starting
point" for mass emails that are sent to all parents in the school.
Organization skills and good communications skills needed.
School Store
The school store is operated by fourth graders three mornings
per week in the front lobby before the start of school. The store sells
small trinkets and some school supplies and provides a great opportunity
for fourth grade students to learn the basics of operating a business
while making it fun for all students to do some shopping on a small
scale. School store parent volunteers help to run the store, train
students, and maintain inventory.
Book Fair
The Devon Book Fair is held once a year in the fall. Students come to
the Fair during their scheduled library period to choose and purchase
books. Parents are also invited to the Book Fair during school or
after-school hours. Volunteers coordinate book selection with the book
vendor, help children with their selections and order forms, work the
"register," and help fill any backorders.
Field Day
Field Day is a day of friendly, outdoor competition for all students in
early June. Volunteers assist the Physical Education teacher with
purchasing refreshments and running the competitions for this fun
spring-time event.
Creative Kids Project
Students’ artwork is reproduced onto items that are then sold to parents
at cost. It encourages children to express themselves artistically and
then enjoy the pride of being able to share their artwork with loved
ones. Historically the artwork has been reproduced onto stationery and
notepads, but t-shirts, mugs, or other items can certainly be considered
by the chair. This usually takes place in the fall so that parents can
purchase gift items for the holiday season. Work can be done from home.
Spirit Wear
Devon logo sportswear and accessories are sold at school events or
through special order, usually once per year.
Publishing Center
Students at Devon are given the exciting opportunity to write and
illustrate their own books. The publishing center coordinates, assembles
and binds these books, which are then presented to the students to take
home. Another copy is made for the library. This endeavor helps to
foster the love of reading and pride of authorship among the
participants. The majority of the work takes place in the spring – there
are tasks that can be done from home as well as the actual binding
process which takes place at the school.
Dental Clinic
A non-profit dental clinic at the T/E Middle School for children in the
T/E and Great Valley school districts. PTO volunteers provide
transportation for students to and from the clinic as needed. The chair
is in contact with the district Dental Clinic Committee, school nurse
and student clients.
Devon Dispatch
The Devon Dispatch is a twice-monthly newsletter that is emailed all
students. PTO volunteers coordinate with principal, school secretary,
and PTO activity chairs to collect content for the newsletter. Editing,
word-processing, flexibility, and good communication skills are
necessary.
Bulletin Boards
PTO volunteers design & construct occasional displays for the lobby
bulletin board to coordinate with school activities. This would be a
terrific opportunity to showcase creative skills!
Health Screenings
Volunteers assist school nurses with annual student health screening
held in September.
Picture Day
Volunteers assist photographers and teachers on individual picture day
(fall) and class picture day (spring)
First Grade First Week Lunch
Parents are needed to assist children during their lunchtime during the
first few days of school.
Devon Dads
Fathers who are willing to help and assist with games, repairing fair
booths and heavy lifting at events throughout the year.
Neighborhood Coordinators
Parents are needed to organize neighborhoods to create raffle baskets
for the Friendraiser event in the Spring.
